Weighted blankets have been a godsend to us. I seriously cannot begin to describe how much they have helped us. I heard about the multiple benefits weighted blankets provide, but it wasn’t until I researched (and researched some more) and then connected with moms who have children with autism who used weighted blankets with their children, that I decided to try it. After I was able to get past the cost, I bought a weighted blanket for my CJ. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE CHANGE! After using the weighted blanket…He wasn’t as anxious. He didn’t fidget as much. He was calm and peaceful. He slept….and therefore, I slept.
Weighted blankets can help reduce anxiety and stress, shorten meltdowns, calm and relax the user by providing pressure touch stimulation without uncomfortable restriction.
CJ has been sleeping with his weighted blanket for almost three years now. I also keep a small, travel weighted blanket in the car that he puts on his lap when we are driving. This small, travel companion has proven to be invaluable on numerous occasions.
If you are looking to purchase a weighted blanket for your child, most occupational therapists recommend to get the blanket weighted with 10% of body weight plus 1-2 lbs (60 lb. kiddos would be looking at a 7-8 lb. weighted blanket). Make sure you check with your child’s OT and/or Pediatrician for medical advice and clearance before purchasing a weighted blanket. I am not a doctor, but I am a mother who has a child with autism, who has seen a huge improvement in her child’s anxiety and sleep since beginning to use weighted blankets.
Weighted blankets are not cheap, but speaking from experience, they last and are worth their weight!! Check these out:
