Diagnosis of autism… Where do I go now?!

imageHearing the word, “autism” can be scary in itself, but when a doctor or other trained professional diagnoses your child or even yourself with autism, it can be outright terrifying!

After CJ was diagnosed, I wrestled with so many questions and thoughts…. Where do I go now?  What do I do?  Where do I start?  How do I start?  How do I do this ALONE?!

One of the first things I would recommend is to educate yourself.  Read and learn everything you can about autism.  Trust your instincts.  If something does not feel right, trust your gut, and ask questions.  You have been blessed with a priceless gift.  Protect your gift and help him or her thrive.  Believe me, it will not be easy, but it is possible.

I have compiled a list of resources that have been beneficial to us.  By no means is it a complete list of resources and services.  It is somewhere to start…

*Organization for Autism Research

*Autism Speaks

*Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD)

*Applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy providers can be found here

*Autism Parenting Magazine

*Gluten-free/casein-free (GFCF) diet

*Vitamin supplementation

*Parent-to-parent assistance

*Autism information

*National Autism Resources
