Moon Sand Sensory Play

Moon sand is out of this world!  Seriously…it is SO much fun to play with!  We make some awesome creations with moon sand, but my personal favorite is making moon sand letters.  When I was teaching my daughter the alphabet, we would make moon sand letters together.  In addition to the academic benefits, this activity allowed her fine-motor practice, as well as sensory benefits.  We would form the letter together, say the letter, practice its sound(s), and then make up words that begin with that particular letter.  She loved it!  Now that she is a little older, she is making words and even short sentences from moon sand!

You can make your own moon sand with just a few ingredients.  Play around with various colors and consistencies.  You can make a new creation every time!

You will need: 2 cups play sand, 1/2 cup of water, 1 cup corn starch, 1 tbsp food coloring (or powdered paint), and glitter.  Another simple recipe I have used is: 8 cups all purpose flour and 1 cup vegetable oil (simply mix the two ingredients together until the desired consistency is reached).

1.  Combine the sand and corn starch in a large bowl.

2.  Slowly mix in the water in increments.

3.  Add colors and glitter.

4. Mix thoroughly.

5.  Happy creating!
